Family Stories

Have you heard a good family story lately? Or told stories to your kids before putting them to sleep? Children love tales about family members. It makes them feel part of a special family. I discovered many wonderful stories while tracing lineages, and wish to share them with you. The stories include family names, special instances not found elsewhere, and some photos.

The story of John Warren Bacon, who settled in Jefferson, Georgia, during the early part of the 19th century, hoping for a very successful business. However, he died young, leaving a widow and three minor children. In early manhood, he fell in love with Mary Jordan, a daughter of Judge of the Inferior Court of Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Soon after his death, the widow, Sarah Dupree Bacon, sister of Judge Lewis Deupree, moved to Lexington, Georgia, with her children.

Known for a good heart, when the public school in Maysville closed for the holidays, Bacon purchased sixty little Christmas gifts for each child; a token that fixed their hearts and minds upon purposes and honorable ambition. Sources: Bible and obituary recorded in the Bacon Family Newsletter, No. 1, September 1997.
